The Silent Patient – Alex Michaelides

Rating – 3 out of 5 stars

I feel a little frustrated with this book, specifically the layout. I know it’s written to be that way, with Alice’s diary randomly placed throughout the story, but it just really bugged me and frustrated me, it didn’t feel right… That coupled with the “parts” that the story was split into, just really spoiled the whole experience for me tbh.

ANYWAY, moving away from my clear dislike of the layout of the book!

Onto the characters, Theo narrates most of the story and to tell you the truth, I found him to be a bit of a wet lettuce. He didn’t really have anything about him, he was boring and a really uninspiring narrator. Alice, on the other hand, SHONE in the parts that she was included in. She had an air of mystery that was definitely enhanced by her silence.

I did find the atmosphere and intrigue to be a bit lacking, but the story did bumble along nicely, it definitely kept my interest piqued, just not necessarily to the point where it was unputdownable (side note – is that even a word?!)

That being said, the plot was clever and I actually didn’t find it to be as predictable as some others had said, I didn’t really guess the twist at the end, although I had a few ideas that were pretty close to home. Because of that it just failed to really wow me. Sure it was good, but I felt deflated by the end.

On the whole, I just found The Silent Paitent to be really underwhelming and a little bit meh.

Until next time, Em xxx
