Aloha and welcome to my blog! I have another review here for you that (shock horror) has been sat here since January 5th when I actually read this book – I’m a review hoarder soz. If you hadn’t guessed from the title I’m reviewing Before You Wake by Adam Nevill which is a collection of 3 short stories.
Overall rating 4 out of 5 stars.
Short story number 1 and 2 were what pushed me to give this book such a high rating, whereas short story 3 was a bit meh.
The Angels of London (short story 1) creeped me out so badly, I felt like I was being watched when I read it. As the tension grew you started to feel more and more sorry for the main character, only be to thrown a HUGE curveball at the end… Oh and it reminded me of that Dr Who episode with the weeping angels, GRIM.
Short story 2 was Always in our Hearts. I thought I’d figured out this one as I was going along, feeling a bit smug with myself, only to be completely wrong. Another twist was coming our way and I did not expect this one – it shocked me.
Lastly, Hippocampus was my least favourite and the reason why this book didn’t get 5 stars. I felt compared to the other two short stories this one was meh. I get it was a short story so wasn’t going to be super long but it felt rushed and I felt there could have been more.
On the whole, with books like this I like to be scared, or shocked, or creeped out and this certainly ticked all of those boxes for me. Whilst I would have liked a deeper aspect to the third story, they all certainly had a disturbing edge to them.
If you’ve read Before You Wake let me know so we can discuss it!
