I was drawn in straight away by the synopsis of this book, it seemed like something that was right up my street, but I have to say I was a little bit disappointed by some aspects…
The atmosphere once the book started was definitely creepy and had an edge to it, but it just lacked that something, that final bit of eeriness that would have given the book a real pop. That being said, the author did maintain the same atmosphere throughout the book, it didn’t stop or waver, and it definitely made this book into a page turner.
And where the atmosphere lacked the intrigue more than made up for it!
I couldn’t put this book down, I needed to know what was going on. Every chapter seemed to end on a mini cliff hanger, but then would swap to another characters perspective and it drew you in to every characters part of the story, until you were so invested in them all that you had to read on to find out how it would end.
The plot itself was the real winner for me, there were so many twists and turns that I thought I was going to get whiplash, but they all worked perfectly to create a truly original plot and wild ride of a book! It was one of the best plot lines I had come across in absolutely ages.
The only thing that really let This Lie Will Kill You down was the characters, which is such a shame as they were an integral part of the book. I felt they weren’t really developed enough for me to form an opinion on them (other than that Parker is an asshole) and that also made them quite unlikeable. I wish the author had just spent a little more time developing them, given the pivotal role they paid to the story.
However, the writing more than made up for the minor issues I had with the characters, Pitcher has a way with words that really get under your skin and make you feel included within the story, as if you were another character. Her descriptive paragraphs transported me directly to the mansion, trying to figure out the puzzle pieces.
On the whole, This Will Kill You was really good! I have to say I enjoyed reading it so much, and I loved the ambiguity at the end, it couldn’t have rounded the book off any better. It was the perfect final touch.
