The Haunting of Hill House, Shirley Jackson – A Review.

Good morning friends! I am here again with a January read, this time one that’s been on my TBR for a little while…

The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson.

Overall rating – 5 out of 5 stars.

I absolutely LOVED this book, I put off reading it for ages because I was worried it wouldn’t live up to my expectations, but it certainly did.

I don’t scare easily when reading scary books, but I was on edge the entire time I read The Haunting of Hill House, I was terrified.

The characters were brilliant, I loved how Eleanor and Theo bounced off each other to begin with and then the twists and turns of their relationship. Dr Montague was a joy to read, as was Luke.

My only wish is that Luke was included a little bit more, especially since he was heir to Hill House, I feel that wasn’t developed as well as it could have been.

The writing of this book is exceptionally clever… It’s written to make us question everything, whether the house is haunted, whether the characters are projecting their fears onto each other, whether there is so much mystery around Hill House that they’re simply scaring themselves because they feel like it should be haunted.

It felt like we were wrapped up in the house itself, living the story as the characters were.

My favourite part was how we were left questioning whether the others treated Eleanor in that way, or if it was all in her head as a result of the house and that is a question that will stay with me forever.

I finished this book over a month ago and I’m still questioning whether the house was haunted or not!

As soon as I closed the last page on this book I just sat, in shock, I felt like I’d been inside Hill House and watched this tale unfolding through my own eyes. It was excellent.

Let me know if you’ve read The Haunting of Hill House, I’d love to know what you thought!

Until next time, Em xxx
