I’m really not sure how to start my review of this book… I don’t want to be a negative person, but this book was just not for me.
I really struggled with the story being delivered to us in third person, I felt the story would have been better written in first person as it would have given a much better insight into, well everything, and perhaps made Hannah a more likeable character. I found her to have *something* that was just very offputting.
I felt the same about the rest of the characters, they all had that something that put me off them and I found it really hard, as a result, to warm to them.
The writing didn’t help either, huge blocks of descriptive writing just weren’t needed and seemed to appear at the least opportune times and ruined any flow the book picked up. It felt like every time we got close to the actual story we were interrupted, and it was super disappointing.
It also meant that the actual plot got lost, which is a real shame because it was evident the author had put a lot of thought into the story and was trying to craft something that could have worked really well and formed a thrilling book.
Because of this, Before We Met became more of a “I’ve started so I’ll finish” story, not one that I felt compelled to finish reading because it was good or interesting, more so that I felt I owed it to myself to see the ending…
On the whole, Before We Met just had a little too much descriptive text and not enough focus on the bits that mattered and that make the story.
Until next time, Em xxx
Ouch!
